I looked down at her just in time to see her open her beautiful eyes.
“Emma,” I mumbled in relief.
We were already entering our house. I didn’t even realize that I was practically running the whole time.
“Em!” Andrew exclaimed as he tried to look at her over my shoulder.
My love kept her eyes on me the entire time. My heart broke when I saw tears forming in those beautiful blue eyes of hers.
“What’s wrong, Emma?” I asked as I entered our house. “Is our baby okay?”
Emma sobbed and wr*pped her arms around my neck. My heart stopped.
Was my little girl okay? What happened to her?
I couldn’t feel my legs anymore. I couldn’t feel my body anymore. I walked to the couch in the living room and sat down. I wouldn’t be able to walk upstairs. My knees were buckling and a huge pit opened up in my stomach.
I was terrified.
“What happened to our child, Emma?” I asked, my voice trembling.
I wasn’t aware of anything that was going on around me. I didn’t know where Andrew and Anna were. All I could see was my beautiful little girl’s face. All I could feel were Emma’s arms around my neck. All I could hear were her sobs.
What happened to my daughter? Was she…
No. I couldn’t even think about that. She was okay. She had to be okay. I would find my little girl and I would bring her home.
Emma continued sobbing.
“What happened, Em?” I heard Andrew’s voice faintly.
I couldn’t focus on him. All I could think about was my daughter.
Emma, baby, please tell me what you see. I mind-linked my mate.
I couldn’t force myself to speak. My throat was dry, and I couldn’t swallow. My lungs felt like someone sq***zed all the air out of them.
Emma lifted her head and looked at me. The fear I saw in her eyes made my stomach turn violently.
“The darkness…” Emma spoke, her voice breaking.
I stopped breathing completely.
“It took over her, Logan,” Emma continued quietly. “Someone forced her to let it out.”
I heard Anna gasp. I heard Andrew curse loudly. I heard something break.
I kept my eyes on Emma the entire time. My mind was blank. I couldn’t understand what she was telling me.
Emma wr*pped her arms around me again and sobbed. I forced my frozen body to move. I placed my hand on the top of her head and p**ssed her closer to me.
Andrew kneeled in front of Emma and me. He placed a hand on her back and r*bbed it gently.
“The only important thing is that she is alive, Em,” Andrew said, his voice laced with fear and pain. “Your baby is alive and we will save her. We will save her from those bastards and we will save her from the darkness.”
He was right. My little girl was alive and that was all that mattered.
Emma turned toward her brother and hugged him tightly. Andrew returned the hug immediately.
“We need to get the boys and Jake back,” Andrew said, keeping his eyes on me. “If they are controlling her and she is consumed by the darkness, there is no telling what they could make her do. They are walking into a trap.”
I forced myself to nod.
He was right. We needed to stop them. We needed a new plan.
My mind went to my son and I wondered how he would react when we told him. I wished that there was a way to protect him from this. I wished that we didn’t have to tell him. But I knew that wouldn’t be fair. I knew that it wouldn’t be possible. He had to know. He had every right to know.
Bring them back, Jason. I mind-linked one of my warriors stationed in the forest.
Yes, Alpha. He mind-linked me back immediately.
Emma let go of Andrew and turned back toward me. I pulled her into my arms and k**sed the top of her head.
“We will bring her back, my love,” I said. “We will save her from the darkness. I promise.”
Alexander’s POV
I was trying to break through a tangled mess of overgrown bush when I got a mind-link from one of my warriors stationed in the forest.
Mind-link didn’t work long-distance so we had to improvise. Phones weren’t an option. There was no signal in the forest so we stationed a warrior every couple of miles so we could be in constant communication with my parents. Jack was one of the three warriors stationed around the forest whose job was to transfer messages bet**en us and my family. He was stationed on the outsk**ts of The Howling Woods.
Your father wants you to come home, Alpha Alexander. Jack mind-linked me.
I stopped moving, making everyone look at me.
Why? I asked as my heart raced. Did they find her?
Oh, Goddess, please.
There was a moment of silence before Jack responded.
No, Alpha. He said, making my heart break even more. But they have relevant information and your father wants you to come home.
I growled. We just started. We barely entered The Howling Woods. I wasn’t going back just because he had relevant information.
Tell him that I am not coming back. I growled through the mind-link. He can tell me the information over the mind-link.
“What is going on, Alex?” Jake asked, making me look at him.
My dad wants us to go back. I mind-linked him. He says that he has relevant information.
Jake’s eyes widened a little.
Hunter shifted back into his human form and grabbed the short sweats that were tied around his ankle.
“What is going on?” he asked as he put the shorts on. “Why did you stop moving?”
We are not going back. Mason growled, making me glance at him.
Good. He was all caught up.
“Logan wants us to retreat,” Jake answered Hunter’s question. “He says that he has some new information.”
Unless he knows where she is and wants us to go there instead, I am not going home. I said through the mind-link with Jake, Mason, and Jack.
Agreed. Mason added.
“Does he know where she is?” Hunter asked, his eyes widening a little.
Your father doesn’t know her whereabouts. Jack mind-linked us.
“No,” Jake answered. “He didn’t tell us what they found out.”
Hunter furrowed his eyebrows and clenched his fists.
“I am not going back then,” Hunter said angrily. “I am continuing and I am going to find her.”
Tell my dad that we aren’t going back. I mind-linked Jack.
I turned back around and continued to push through the forest. Not being able to run frustrated me so f**king much. There were a lot of fallen trees blocking our paths, but the worst of all were these overgrown, dense bushes and roots that kept getting in our way. We had to stop running every now and then and break through the obstacles using our teeth or our paws.
Alpha, your father insists. Jack mind-linked me, making me stop again. He says it’s dangerous to continue.
I growled again. I knew it was dangerous. This part of the forest was always dangerous. I didn’t give a shit, though. I would go in there no matter what. I had to find her.
Tell him that I don’t f**king care. I growled at Jack.
