“What’s your relation to the patient?” the doctor asked him.
Carter seemed to be stunned by the question. Who was Shirley to him?
Was he her husband? No.
However, she was pregnant with his child. Her sweetheart?
Not even that.
He had never given her any promise as sweethearts would.
The relationship between them could no longer be described in simple words.
The doctor thought it odd when he saw Carter not speaking for a long time. And then Carter finally spoke.
“I am her… lover.” ‘Is that right?
‘She should still love me, right?’ Carter thought, comforting himself.
When the doctor heard this, he interpreted this as them being husband and wife.
“Sir, I’m sorry to tell you that the child in your wife’s womb was already gone while you were on the way here.”
Carter’s heart turned cold after hearing the doctor’s answer.
He was stunned, and his eyes lost focus. It took a good few seconds before Carter, not entirely present, continued to ask, “What about my wife? How is she?”
“Many of your wife’s bones are fractured. Her waist was the most serious, and we’ve discovered that her legs seem to have already lost their ability to function. Coupled with her current waist injury, it’s almost impossible for her to stand up again.”
“I’m not asking about this! I only want to know if she can continue to live properly! ”
Carter lost control and yelled.
The doctor, shocked, quickly answered.
“Yes! Of course! She’s not in any danger, but she won’t be able to live like a normal person.”
“Who says she can’t? As long as I’m by her side, she’ll be able to live like any other normal person! ”
After the red-eyed Carter was done yelling at the doctor, he walked straight into the operating theatre.
Kendrick, who stood motionless as he watched the man lost control of his emotions, could emphasize with Carter.
When Niamh noticed Kendrick’s unusual mood, she quickly caught on.
“Kendrick, are you thinking about what happened to me back then?”
Kendrick suddenly returned to his senses. He nodded truthfully, then lowered his gaze and looked into Niamh’s beautiful eyes.
“That day, I also had anxiously paced in the hallway like Carter. I kept staring at the red light above the door of the operating theatre.”
Kendrick reminisced. Even though Niamh was standing next to him right now, he still felt a bone- piercing pain surging through his blood.
“After the light had turned off, the doctor told me that you were gone. I didn’t believe him, and I refused to believe him. I had hoped that you were merely lying to me, that you were just acting. As Kendrick spoke, his eyes turned red as well.
Niamh held his hand, and she realized that his hand was icy.
“Kendrick, stop thinking about those unhappy memories. I’m right here with you now, and I’m fine.”
When he heard that, Kendrick smiled warmly, then lifted his hand, pulled Niamh into his arms, and held her tightly.
“Nia, I’m really stupid, right? I only realized how important you are to me at that moment. You had already rooted yourself in my heart, yet I had no idea even though I loved you deeply.”
Kendrick felt extremely remorseful and he blamed himself.
Niamh smiled and lifted her hand to pat his back. She comforted gently, “ Sometimes, the onlooker sees more of the game. Don’t blame yourself.”
“Of course, I blame myself for not appreciating such an amazing wife.” Although Kendrick said that in a joking tone, he was sincere when he said that.
Niamh, too, certainly knew how much this man in front of her cared about her.
“Eveline, where’s Carter?” Camille, who finally arrived, asked. “Do you know what’s Shirley’s condition?”
When they were leaving the house, Camille had suddenly received an important call and had to take the urgent matter. That was why she had only just arrived.
Niamh looked at the operating theatre and remorsefully said, “Carter just went into the operating theatre. Shirley’s fine, but the child in her womb is gone.”

He picked up the bill on the box and saw that it had been sent out before he and Niamh went out. What was even weirder was that it was sent from Gray Villa.
Niamh and Kendrick shared a look and took the box upstairs.
Even though they did not know what was happening, they were certain that Carter had not sent them this.
When Kendrick opened it, he saw a securely wrapped box of test reagents.
There were seven of them, and they were icy blue.
“What test reagents are these?” This was the first time Niamh saw test reagents in this color.
Kendrick, however, was familiar with them. The anti-toxoid test reagent for AXP69 Shirley sent over that day was similar to this color.
However, that one had looked more pigmented than the test reagents in this box.
“This should be from Shirley. ” Kendrick assumed, but at the same time, he was almost certain.
“Shirley?” Niamh was surprised. “What test reagents are these, then? Why did she send these to you this morning?”
Niamh asked, puzzled, but after a while, she immediately made the connection.
“I understand now.”
Niamh suddenly looked into Kendrick’s eyes which showed that Kendrick had similarly seen through this.
“Since she had sent this parcel to you, these test reagents are for you. The poison she developed back then had changed the color of your pupils and hair, which are still not completely recovered yet. So, these might be the anti-toxoid reagents that can clear the poison in your body.”
Niamh voiced the assumptions in her heart, and Kendrick agreed.
“Nia, look, there’s a letter too.”
Niamh eyed the letter Kendrick took out from the bottom of the box.
When she opened it, it was evident that it was from Shirley.
There was but a simple line of words on the letter. “ Kendrick, these are the test reagents that can get rid of the remaining poison in your body. When that happens, the color of your hair and pupils will return to normal. I’ve written down the directions to use them on the box. I hope you get well soon.
I’m sorry.”
The signature was Shirley’s.
Her handwriting was very beautiful, just like how she had looked.
In reality, however, Shirley’s heart was not that vile and foul.
After Niamh and Kendrick finished reading the letter, they shot another look at the box of test reagents, feeling slightly touched.
However, right now, Niamh felt more relieved. He could finally go back to the way he had been.
