Everett loves all of his uncles..but Moose had to be his favorite, and I absolutely hated it.
Obviously I know my son loves me the most..well, after his mother of course, but I can’t fault him for that..but when he laughs harder than ever at something Moose does..I want to punch the guy in the face. I get it..Moose is funny looking..but why does my son have to be so happy about it?
I quickly got Everett dressed and packed up all his snacks and a few pullups then headed out the door. I knew this first week would be hard..but I didn’t expect it to be this bad and it hadn’t even been an hour. I miss my wife like crazy..you would think I should be used to her being gone by now, but she was right. This is different..we always spent our summers together no matter what.
We eventually made it to the park and I couldn’t help but constantly check my phone for missed calls or texts from my wife when Moose and Milo showed up first.
“There’s my little guy!” Moose boomed, scaring a few kids along the way..but not Everett..nope, my little dude went waddling over to him at full speed.
I watched in annoyance as Moose swooped Everett up before spinning him around, making him burst into giggles.
“Aww, have you been having to put up with your dad’s grumpy ass all morning.” He cooed, making me roll my eyes.
“I’m about to get even grumpier if you keep that up.” I grumbled, and that’s when Milo walked towards me before slapping my back.
“Come on..that’s why we are here, to distract you and keep you company. Where’s Ben?” He asked curiously and that’s when we heard two high-pitched screams coming from the parking lot.
“Never mind..guess they are here now.” Milo grumbled and I tried so hard to stifle a laugh.
Yep..I knew my niece’s screams anywhere.
“Uncie Cas!” Lottie shouted before running towards me excitedly with Lainey not too far behind.
I crouched down, feeling the two slam into me as I opened my arms wide for them.
“Well, there are my two princesses.” I said happily, noticing that Ben must’ve dressed them this morning.
Their outfits were completely mismatched and uncoordinated. Robin always made sure they looked their best before leaving the house so she must’ve been sleeping in this morning..not that they still didn’t look adorable.
The girls were a little over two and a half now and it was crazy to see how much their personalities were changing more and more.
Lainey was the shy sweet one..and Lottie..oh god..she was a complete diva. But she knew how to play her cards right and could break down the strongest of men with one adorable smile.
Man..I couldn’t wait to have a little girl..don’t get me wrong, I love Everett to death..but to have a mini Johnnie..I think that’s my dream now.
“So, how’s he holding up?” My brother-in-law asked..well, I guess he was my real brother too. That was still hard to wrap my head around some days.
“He hasn’t punched Moose in the face yet..so I would say better than I thought!” Milo teased as I shot him an annoyed look..maybe he will be the one getting punched in the face..
We ended up just chatting and watching the kids play for about an hour until we took them all to McDonald’s to get a happy meal..by the end of it, I couldn’t take it anymore.
Johnnie had to be on her lunch break by now..at least she should be.
I left Everett with Moose and Milo for a minute before walking outside and calling her phone.
“Hey, baby.” She answered, making my heart ache.
Fuck I missed her.
“How is it going so far? Have you eaten lunch yet? Have you made any friends?” I rushed out, wanting her to spill the damn tea.
Johnnie wasn’t just the love of my life, she was my best friend too and we told each other everything..and I mean everything.
“How’s our son first..is he doing okay?” Johnnie asked worriedly, making me smile to myself. Damn, she was such a good mother…I was one lucky bastard to have a wife like her, seriously.
“He is doing great. Of course he misses you..me too..but we are handling ourselves just fine..now tell me how it’s going.”
“Well..you are never going to guess who is also interning here..” She began, making my stomach twist as the way she said that made me nervous. Who the hell could it be?
“If it’s Heaven..” I grumbled, hoping to god it wasnt.. I always have some type of fear that she might pop up again.
“Well..close, but no..she is one of your ex’s though.” Johnnie muttered, making me swallow hard.
Yeah..I thought wisely about this and decided to not start naming off guesses..for my own self-preservation of course.
“Who?” I went with instead.
“Ava Wilson.”
Fuck.
“She isn’t talking shit to you is she?!” I blurted, already getting pissed off.
“No, relax Caspian..she actually did the opposite. She apologized for her behavior and asked if we could have a fresh start.” She went on to say, making my mouth drop open from surprise.
Wow..I was not expecting that.
I mean..Ava wasn’t as bad as Heaven..but she still talked shit about my wife and was annoying about it all. Eventually, she seemed to let it go..but I personally want nothing to do with the chick..and I don’t think Johnnie should either.
“Babe..” I began, making Johnnie chuckle softly.
“I know..I’m not going to drop my guard just yet. But I wanted to tell you. I will be careful though baby, I promise.” She whispered, making my heart begin to ache again as I glanced through the window, seeing Everett laughing as something Milo was doing.
“No guys have been hitting on you or anything right?” I had to make sure..she would tell me too if someone was..and honestly, I would probably beat the guy’s ass.
“No baby..I wouldn’t let that happen..but someone has been very interested in meeting you.” She said playfully, making my brow furrow in confusion.
“Who?”
“His name is Steven.”
“Steven?!” I blurted, not liking this already. So she was working closely with a guy. I know I shouldn’t get all jealous..but it’s hard not to.
