Chapter 51 – When My Ungrateful Husband Crawls Back

“Women catch feelings over heels?” My brows drew in, sincerely wondering whether that is it. If it is true, then I might actually try it on someone else, maybe she will fall for me that way. “I sent Grace shoes once and you don’t see us living happily, do you?” I pondered back to a moment where I sent my sister shoes-I mean she pleaded with me for a while to buy it for her till I eventually caved but yeah.

If heels make women move, then my sister and I will not be fighting as much as we still do like we are five.

Gloria released a deep breath, and I could picture her shaking her head in disappointment. “How can you compare you and your sister’s relationship to you and Zara?” She inquired, as if trying to understand how my brain works.

I pressed my lips together, then shrugged, “Because Zara is like a sister to me. That’s how.” We are not exactly close, but if we were, I would keep her under the line of women I would consider sisters and not a lover. “Also, Carter sent her those shoes, I do not even know what it’s like.” I added, wanting to put an end to this conversation as soon as I can.

“For crying out loud, Christian!” My mother huffed out a breath of frustration, “Can you just pay heed to me for once and settle down with a woman. Is that too much to ask? For you to bring home a woman? All you do is go around with Carter and I am starting to worry because, well…”

“Because?” I pressed, wanting to know what is bothering my mother like this.

She was silent for a while, before she confessed. “Because people are already gossiping that you two have a thing going?”

“What?” I laughed, throwing my head back as I shuddered at the mere thought of that. I was quick to chase away the thought, not in any way willing to entertain it.

My mother did not find it amusing, “It is not funny, Christian!” She scolded, sounding genuinely frustrated. “Unless you want me to have a heart attack, you will settle down for my sake.”

“I will, but with the woman of my choice.” My laughter died down, toning down to a small grin instead. “I know my dear mother you are stressed on this, but I promise, I have someone.” I have lost count of how many times I have said that to her.

But I guess it has reached the point where she no longer buys it. “Christian, if I age every time I hear that I will long be in my grave by now.”

I chuckled, unable to help myself. “I am serious, this time. Seriously. There is a woman I like, and I am certain you will love her as well. Just try me on this.”

She hummed, not believing me in the slightest. Gloria Kingston although generally nice, can be a picky person when it comes to people she allows around her children, and I am certain she is not welcoming of any woman outside her folder of blind dates she put together for me. “Are you about to have another scandal with a woman like you did two years ago?” She asked, bringing up the topic for the first time ever.

I am quite surprised she did not do so before really. Knowing her, I thought she will pester me when the news broke out, but she has been surprisingly quiet about it, not pestering me to bring the lady home or anything. She was simply quiet, until she no longer was not.

This time around, it was my turn to hum at her words, not knowing what to say without lying to her. “I am not so sure,” Anything can happen, “But I promise if there will be a scandal, it will be all truth this time around.” That’s the best I can promise her.

I could tell she was hesitating, but she eventually sighed. “We have a family dinner this Sunday,” She reminded me, her tone dejected but serious at the same time. “Bring this woman of yours over, or else, it is back to back blind dates for you, young man.”

“I am not young, I am becoming thirty this year.” I pointed out,

“Exactly.” She agreed, “You are not getting any younger and neither am I. So, wife a woman up and bring her home. I need more grand babies soon.”

“Later, mom.” I cut her off before she could go on further. She tried to carry on, but I ended the call, knowing any important thing she wanted to say has ended and she will be off to pestering me if I let her. With her voice no longer filling the space of my office, I released a sigh of relief and extended my hand out to loosen my neck tie, fully preparing to carry on with my work.

However, a buzz from the intercom came, breaking my attention from my work. Pressing the answer button, the receptionist’s voice came. “Mr. Kingston,” The woman called out. “You have a guest here to see you.” She announced. “But, she is not part of your schedule.”

My gaze flicked to the digital clock on my table that read 7:04PM, realizing how late it is already. I am certain most of the workers have clocked out as well. “Who is it?” I asked, though normally I would turn down anyone out of my schedule, I had a feeling I know who it is this time.

And I was right, because the receptionist confirmed my thought. “Miss Isabella Montague, Sir.”

My lips slowly slanted upwards into a smile almost immediately, as I gave her my response. “Let her up.” I ended the call, focusing my attention back on the folder in front of me, knowing it would take her about four to five minutes to get here.

Much to my thoughts, four minutes later, the door to my office was pushed open followed by the sound of heels kissing the marble floor. I flicked my gaze to my wrist watch, taking note of the time this time around before my smile widened. “16 Hours to the Deadline,” I stated, nodding slowly to myself, before I raised my head to rest my gaze on her, “I was right. You will come to me.”

Isabella narrowed her eyes at me, but she made no move to further showcase her being upset or anything. She did well to keep her expression professional. Then, she closed the distance between us, her voice came for the first time. “I have something to talk to you about,” She declared, coming to stand in front of my desk. “Are you free?”
