Khloe sighed. “This so-called gift is a billion-dollar company. You can’t be serious!”
But Henrik only shrugged, his expression nonchalant. He acted as though he was merely offering her a trinket, not a fortune that other people would die for. “If I say it is, then it is. Besides, I don’t like things too formal between us-it feels too distant. And we both know distant people don’t play their parts well.”
Before she could protest, he took her hand and guided it to sign her name on the document.
A week passed.
Khloe leaned comfortably against Henrik, a book in her hands.
Given their act as an engaged couple, it was crucial to grow accustomed to the occasional physical closeness. These days, whenever Khloe came near, Henrik no longer reacted as though anticipating a threat.
Upon hearing that Sloane was getting engaged to Eric, her former fiance, Khloe couldn’t help but chuckle.
“My stepsister is getting engaged? Well, I simply must attend and offer my congratulations.”
Henrik leaned back, his gaze fixed on Khloe’s amused smile, a shadow of intrigue flickering in his eyes. He offered, “Do you require my assistance?”
Khloe gave a slight shake of her head. “No need. Just sit back and enjoy the show.”
Henrik’s interest only grew. Smiling faintly, he lifted her hand and pressed a kiss to its back. “I’m looking forward to it.”
The day of the engagement arrived, and the Evans family’s estate was adorned with opulent arrangements of imported flowers.
Lavish and exorbitantly priced refreshments and drinks were served in abundance.
The guest list consisted of Evans family friends, relatives, and influential figures from the elite circles. The Watson family’s elite status made them the focal point of every guest’s flattery and attention.
Any event bearing the Watson name was sure to draw a crowd.
But this gathering was merely the Evans family’s engagement celebration.
Even though Eric was the sole Watson representative, it was more than enough for the Evans family to gloat. Securing an alliance with the Watsons promised yet another boost to the Evans family’s social standing.
In the dressing room, Sloane stood gracefully, draped in a stunning haute couture gown that accentuated her refined elegance.
Lorraine, standing nearby, offered a word of caution. “Sloane, you need to keep a firm grip on Eric. The Evans family’s fortune is nothing compared to the Watsons’. If you play your cards right, their wealth could be yours.”
“Mom, enough with the nagging! I get it already! I’m not stupid like Khloe, who completely blew her chances. What I can’t figure out is why Eric still has her on his mind after all this time. Is it just because she’s good-looking?” Sloane’s impatience was written all over her face, and a flicker of jealousy sparked in her eyes as she uttered Khloe’s name.
“Don’t let Eric see how you really feel. If you hadn’t played the part of the protective sister to make yourself look virtuous, he wouldn’t have fallen for you so easily. Besides, Khloe is already in Karl’s hands. She’s no threat to you anymore,” Lorraine replied with a sinister smile. “Once the wedding’s done, I’ll take care of her mother as well. After that, there’ll be no loose ends.”
The mother and daughter shared a knowing look before breaking into laughter, already savoring the luxurious lifestyle that awaited them.
It wasn’t long before the engagement party officially began. The Evans family had organized an extravagant outdoor banquet to celebrate the engagement.
Guests mingled in clusters around elegantly set long tables, exchanging pleasantries and gossip.
A round stage adorned with flowers occupied the center of the courtyard, linked by a walkway to the mansion’s second floor.
Eric was the first to make an appearance, dressed impeccably in a crisp white suit that exuded elegance and effortless charm.
His arrival instantly captured the attention of many young women in the crowd.
At that moment, the spotlights around the venue converged on the mansion’s second-floor balcony. Sloane appeared at the top of the grand spiral staircase, making a stunning entrance.
She wore a beautiful haute couture gown. The layered skirt sparkled with diamond-like glimmers, giving it a magical, dreamlike look.
With her bright, sweet smile, she looked just like a princess from a fairytale. All eyes turned to her.
The women in the crowd couldn’t help but stare at Sloane, their expressions a mix of envy and jealousy.
Sloane soaked up every second of the spotlight, reveling in the admiration.
The soft strains of music began to play.
Sloane was just about to step down the staircase when a sudden, thunderous roar echoed from above, freezing her in place.
A powerful gust of wind blasted through the courtyard, causing the guests to cover their eyes.
Sloane staggered, nearly losing her balance as she let out a startled scream. “What on earth is that?”
Confused, she glanced upward to find a helicopter hovering over the courtyard.
Clinging to its ladder was a figure-bold and unmistakable. Sloane’s eyes narrowed in a mix of fury and shock, her disbelief spilling out in a sharp, outraged scream.
A helicopter hovered high above, and from its open cabin, a striking figure emerged.
She was draped in an elegant white gown that hugged her waist, the fabric flowing like soft clouds around her. From the ground, the guests caught glimpses of her long legs.
And the most eye-catching detail was the diamond necklace adorning her neck, glittering under the sunlight.
Her face was flawless, with a glow that seemed almost ethereal. Bright eyes sparkled with mystery, the slight upturn of her lips adding a touch of irresistible allure. Beneath her high-bridged nose, her rosy lips were as captivating as a freshly bloomed rose.
Her long hair cascaded down her back, moving with the breeze like an enchantress casting a spell, capturing everyone’s attention.
