“I dare not stalk you, sir. It’s just a coincidence,” the man replied.
“A coincidence that the man who raised me, almost like an uncle, is here as my chief maid?” Christian asked, eyeing him.
“It must be fate, sir,” the man replied.
Christian stared at him, unimpressed. “You’re rejected.”
“Thank you, sir,” the old man said, smiling and bowing.
Christian scoffed. “Why are you thanking me?”
“Because I’m grateful that you accepted me,” the man responded, still bowing.
“What? I said you’re rejected,” Christian insisted.
“Thank you, sir,” the old man repeated, not deterred.
“Don’t provoke me, old man,” Christian warned. But once again, the man bowed and thanked him, continuing to do so until he left.
Christian shook his head in disbelief. “Do you know him before recruiting him?” he asked, directing his question to Bree B.
“No, no sir,” Bree B answered quickly. “I was just as surprised as you to see that you two know each other. But I believe this will make things easier, since he’s familiar with you.”
Christian sighed, frustrated. He couldn’t order Bree B to find a new temporary chief because she had to go see her daughter, who had just given birth, and her son was also getting married. He dismissed her with a frustrated sigh, knowing full well that the old man was always a pain in the neck. Mr. Clinton was like an uncle to him, someone who had grown up alongside him and could always tame him.
As Bree B was leaving, she received a credit alert for a large sum of money. Her eyes filled with tears as she covered her mouth in disbelief. Amused and grateful, she went back to thank him, but Christian wouldn’t open the door. Knowing him well, she texted him to express her appreciation for the kind gesture.
“I should also do something to show my gratitude,” she said to herself, dialing Blue’s number.
“Hi, Mrs. Bree B,” Blue answered.
“Hi, Blue. I want you to come to Mr. Christian’s mansion, along with Sandra,” Bree B instructed.
“For real? Mrs. Bree B?” Blue shouted in excitement.
“I want you both to come work for Mr. Christian’s wife and make sure you attend to all her needs. Will you be able to do that?” Bree B asked.
“Yes, for sure. Hundred percent,” Blue confirmed enthusiastically.
“Alright then, meet me right away,” she said before hanging up. She sighed, smiling. The money was substantial, and she was already thinking about all the things she could buy for her newborn grandchild and gifts for her daughter-in-law.
Alice grinned as she checked her pages. Her followers had increased significantly, and since her last TikTok challenge video, she had been getting a lot of attention on social media and in her DMs. She was unfollowing some accounts when someone entered. She turned to yell at them, but restrained herself when she saw it was her mother, and continued with what she was doing.
“Hey Alice, how’s my baby doing?” Patricia asked with a smile as she approached her.
“Fine,” Alice replied coldly.
“And what are you doing that has you so engrossed?” Patricia asked as she sat down on the bed.
“Something,” Alice answered again, her tone still cold.
“I have some good news, baby.”
“What’s it?”
“Sharon called me.”
“Who’s Sharon?”
“Christian’s mother.”
Alice jumped up, tossing the bed covers aside.
“She called you?”
“Yes.”
“Why? Did something happen?” Alice scoffed, flipping her hair back. “I knew it. Who would be satisfied with that kind of dirty girl? I knew they’d come for me, so soon. They’re so impatient,” she chuckled.
“I believe so too. They invited us to dinner.”
“Dinner?” Alice blushed, trying to conceal her joy.
“Yes, my baby. So, I want you to put on your best dress, apply makeup, and look so breathtaking that they won’t be able to look away.”
“Trust me, Mum, you don’t have to worry about that. My beauty alone is enough to get them hooked, so relax your mind,” she assured Patricia, grinning.
“I trust my daughter,” Patricia winked, causing Alice to blush. “If you need anything, don’t hesitate to tell me.”
“Yes, I need a new dress. I wouldn’t want to wear one of my old clothes to see my husband-to-be.”
“But you went shopping yesterday.”
“That was for my TikTok challenge.”
“Oh, no problem then, anything for you.”
“Thanks, Mum. Muah!” Alice blew her a kiss while Patricia danced happily away.
“I’m going to show that Moraine and shut her mouth for good,” Patricia said as she closed the door behind her.
Alice sat on her bed with her legs crossed, blushing and chuckling. “No one takes what belongs to Alice. Now let’s go get what belongs to me,” she said to herself confidently.
Clarisse groaned as the reflection of the sun shone into her eyes. She moaned as she turned around. Just then, she heard the door open and then close. She pretended to still be asleep, afraid the person who came in was Christian. She didn’t want to see him or have any conversation with him, and she hated the fact that he was the first person she was going to see when she opened her eyes in the morning.
She heard footsteps going toward the window, and the curtain was drawn open, causing the light to penetrate the room further. Thankfully, she was facing away from the window.
“I think it’s time to wake up, ma’am,” a man’s voice said, but it wasn’t Christian’s. She sprang up to see who the stranger was and saw a man who seemed to be in his mid-fifties.
“Good morning, ma’am,” he greeted with a smile, bowing slightly.
“Good morning, sir,” she jumped up and bowed as well.
Her attitude amused the man, and his smile deepened. “I’m not ‘sir,’ ma’am. Please call me Clinton. I’m here to make sure all your needs are attended to.”
“Huh? Uh… I’m fine. Please don’t bother,” she said anxiously, not used to being respected, not even by an elderly man.
“It’s my job, ma’am,” he said.
“Clarisse, please call me Clarisse.”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t do that, ma’am.”
“Why?” she asked. “I mean, you’re my elder.”
“And you’re my boss.”
“Boss? Me?” she asked, pointing at herself and chuckling nervously. “I think you’re mistaken.”
Clinton smiled. “However, I’m here to invite you to the dining room. Breakfast is ready.”
Clarisse’s heart skipped a beat. “Are the families waiting for me? But I’m not ready to meet them. They’ll surely hate me,” she thought to herself as the image of meeting Victor’s family for the first time flashed through her mind.
“Can I skip it?” she asked.
