Sarah had used and exploited her repeatedly-then always shifted the blame back on her.
In just two or three days, Sarah’s dark secrets had spread across campus.
…
Outside the classroom.
Knock knock.
The class turned toward the door.
When they saw Zayden standing there, Henry stood up at once. “You need something?”
He stepped protectively in front of Elena.
Zayden’s voice was cold. “I’m here to see
Elena.”
Henry narrowed his eyes. “Elena doesn’t want to see you.”
“I came to see Elena. Not you.”
Zayden stared at Henry coldly. The tension between the two felt ready to snap at any second.
But Elena stood up and said calmly, “If you’ve got something to say, you can say it here.”
“Come outside,” Zayden ordered, tone firm and commanding.
He still thought he could summon her like before-as if nothing had changed in the last two months.
Elena gave a slight laugh. “If you’re here about Sarah, then there’s nothing to talk about.”
Zayden had always been Sarah’s white knight. Ever since they were little, he and Sarah had been close. Now that Sarah was in trouble, of course he’d come running to defend her.
“Elena, did you really have to blow things up like this? Sarah already knows she was wrong. Isn’t that enough? Why do you insist on making things worse?”
Rumors about Sarah had exploded across the school. To Zayden, there could only be one culprit-Elena.
Elena finally understood.
He wasn’t here for her.
He was here to speak for Sarah.
He believed she was the one playing dirty.
So that’s what she was to him.
“I’m not the one spreading rumors,” Elena said flatly. “If you want answers, you should be asking Sarah.”
She continued, “You should ask her if she thought about the consequences when she made those choices. If not for her actions, no one would have anything to say about her now.”
Sarah had spent years building a perfect image-on top of others. She had taken what she wanted, crushed others to get there, and enjoyed it.
It was no surprise that now, the people she’d stepped on were speaking up.
“You’re still talking like this?” Zayden frowned. “You’re her sister. Do you even care what this is doing to her?”
Elena chuckled, though her eyes glinted with something bitter.
“So now she remembers I’m her sister.”
Since childhood, anything Elena liked had to be given up for Sarah.
Sarah always claimed she didn’t want anything of Elena’s-yet she always ended up taking it.
Her toys.
Her space.
Even Zayden.
And when she did, no one reminded her they were sisters.
So why should she care now?
Zayden’s breath caught for a moment as he saw the flicker of sorrow in her eyes-the same look he had seen once before.
He didn’t know why, but that expression struck him harder than her words.
Elena’s voice turned cool. “Zayden, if you like Sarah, that’s your business. Don’t come looking for closure from me.”
Zayden’s frustration finally snapped. “Elena, I’m talking to you-!”
“Zayden!”
Sarah rushed into the classroom, grabbing his arm.
“Don’t be angry at Elena,” she said sweetly. “It’s all my fault anyway.”
Elena had already returned to her seat.
Sarah’s entrance was perfectly timed.
She’d probably been eavesdropping the whole time-waiting to jump in and look innocent.
That was just like her.
Henry stepped in, shielding Elena. “Zayden, take your dear little sister and leave. Can’t you see Elena doesn’t want to talk to you?”
“I’ve had enough of you!” Zayden’s voice sharpened. “Elena is my fiancée! We grew up together-who the hell are you? What right do you have to interfere?”
He had reached his breaking point.
Elena had been spending every day with Nolan, laughing and chatting with Henry.
It was as if life without him suited her better.
The jealousy burned through him even though he didn’t want to admit it.
From the side, Sarah flinched at Zayden’s words.
He had just publicly declared Elena was his fiancée.
Her face twitched uncontrollably.
But Henry remained unbothered. “You say that like Elena actually sees you as her fiancé.”
He crossed his arms. “And I’m her friend. You think you can barge into Class Six and start yelling at her without asking us first?”
“Yeah, crown prince,” another Class Six student chimed in mockingly. “Didn’t you already mess around with her sister? What are you doing back here with Elena?”
“Or what, you want them both? You want Sarah and Elena? Why don’t you go ask the Delaney family if they’re okay with you marrying them both?”
The mocking laughter of Class Six echoed through the room.
Zayden’s face darkened instantly.
“Elena, say something, won’t you? I know you don’t like me, but no matter what, Zayden is still your fiancé. How can you let others humiliate him like this?” Sarah said, putting on her most pitiful face.
That look-Elena had seen it countless times in her previous life. Sarah had always nestled into Zayden’s arms just like this, feigning innocence.
She still remembered the day Sarah returned from overseas. Zayden had dropped everything to personally pick her up at the airport-leaving Elena alone and humiliated.
At that moment, she had realized she was the joke.
Now, Elena slowly looked up, her eyes pitch-black and unreadable.
The intensity in her gaze made Sarah’s heart skip. She instinctively felt a chill-but outwardly kept her composure.
“So Zayden is my fiancé?” Elena’s voice was calm, yet sharp. “With the way you two act, I thought you were already married.”
The words hit like a whip. Sarah froze.
She had clung to Zayden’s arm out of habit, not even realizing she was doing it in front of everyone.
And because Zayden didn’t find it strange, no one else had questioned it-until Elena said it out loud.
Only now did people notice how intimate they had always been.
Zayden immediately pulled his arm free, startled into self-awareness.
But what did it matter?
Their closeness wasn’t accidental. Zayden had never found anything wrong with it.
Now his face flushed with discomfort. “Sarah and I grew up together. It’s just habit. Don’t take it the wrong way.”
Sarah followed up with a sugary smile, “That’s right, Elena. We’ve known each other since we were kids. It’s no big deal. We’re still in high school-it’s just holding hands, nothing serious.”
Elena almost laughed.
Just high schoolers? Just holding hands?
Coming from Sarah, those words were always so absurd.
What-only once the two of them were in bed together would it count as “serious”?
“I was just making an offhand comment. Don’t take it personally,” Elena replied coolly. “Class is starting soon. If you don’t mind, could you both leave? You’re interrupting our lesson.”
