“We will talk with Anna and we will see what can be done,” Logan continued, r*bbing my back gently. “We have to get rid of it for good. We have to find a way to get rid of it for good.”
Thankfully, he was completely unaware of my inner turmoil. I knew what he would say. I knew that he would insist on finding another way, but I wanted to try it. I couldn’t let my daughter suffer again. I couldn’t let her get hurt again.
I was going to take her darkness and I was going to deal with it on my own. I wouldn’t let it hurt my family again. This started with me and it was going to end with me.
Logan k**sed the top of my head just as the door opened and Alex walked inside. He kept glancing bet**en Logan and me. He had a pissed-off look on his face and I knew what he was going to ask even before he did.
“What is going on?” he asked angrily. “Why are you two so worried?”
Logan let me go and sighed.
“Close the door, Alex,” he said as he sat down on the couch and pulled me to sit next to him.
Alex slammed the door shut and turned back around. He crossed his arms over his ch*st and narrowed his eyes at us.
“Talk,” he said sternly.
I glanced at Logan and took his hand in mine.
“Sophia’s darkness isn’t gone,” I said, taking a deep breath. “It is just supp**ssed and it is only a matter of time before it comes back.”
Alex’s eyes widened. He gasped loudly and his hands fell to his sides.
“Are you kidding me?!” he shouted, clenching his fists. “Are you f**king kidding me?!”
He turned to his left and slammed his fists against the wall.
“Alex!” Logan shouted and jumped up.
He approached our son and pulled him away from the wall. He made him sit bet**en us on the couch and I took Alex’s injured hand in mine. I watched his wound close slowly, but my mom instinct still wouldn’t let me do nothing about it. I stood up, grabbed a tissue from the desk drawer, and sat back down next to my son. I took his injured hand in mine and started wiping the blood away, p**ssing on the wound as gently as I could.
“It’s okay, Mom,” Alex mumbled quietly. “It’s not bleeding anymore.”
I looked up at him and he sighed. He knew that he wouldn’t win this argument. He was my son and I was going to make sure that he was okay, even though he was a grown werewolf.
“How could this happen?” Alex mumbled as he ran his fi**gers through his hair. “He marked her. She came back.”
Alex shook his head and looked at me.
“Are you sure, Mom?” he asked, his voice trembling. “Maybe you are wrong. Maybe…”
I lifted my hand and caressed his cheek.
“I am not wrong, honey,” I said quietly. “I can feel it. It is still here.”
Seeing the pain in my son’s eyes only solidified my decision. I couldn’t let my children go through that again. Alex was broken the entire time Sophia was gone. He was so scared that he would never get his sister back and I couldn’t let him go through it again.
“We will find a way to get rid of it, bud,” Logan said as he wr*pped an arm around Alex’s shoulders. “We won’t let it take her again.”
“But what if…” Alex spoke, but Logan interrupted him.
“There are no what-ifs,” Logan said with determination in his voice. “We will find a way to get rid of it. It won’t take her again. We won’t lose her again.”
Alex looked at me and my heart broke.
“Do you have any ideas, Mom?” he asked desperately. “What can we do that we didn’t already? How can we beat this thing?”
I had an idea. I had a whole plan, but I couldn’t let them know. Not yet. Logan and Andrew would try to stop me. They would say that we needed to find another way. They wouldn’t let me do it before we ran out of other options.
But by then it could be too late. The darkness could come back and take my daughter away from me forever.
I couldn’t let that happen. I wouldn’t let that happen.
“I don’t know yet, honey,” I lied, making Alex sigh and close his eyes. “But I will find something. I promise. I won’t let it happen again.”
Alex leaned his forehead on my shoulder and I k**sed his temple.
“Why her, Mom?” he mumbled. “Why her?”
I gulped and tried to stop the tears from falling out of my eyes. I looked at Logan and saw that he was trying not to cry as well.
I placed my hand on the top of Alex’s head and held him close to me.
“I will fix it, Alex,” I said, keeping my eyes on my mate. “I promise, honey. I will fix it.”
This whole thing started with me. It started because of me. I was the reason my children were suffering and I couldn’t let it go on.
I needed to find a way to take Sophia’s darkness and I needed to do it fast.
The curse would end exactly where it began.
With me.
Sophia’s POV
I woke up when I felt soft k**ses being placed on my neck. I smiled and lifted my hand to tangle my fi**gers into Hunter’s hair.
“Good morning, Angel,” he mumbled, his voice quiet and raspy.
My lower belly tingled and I had to hold back a m**n. He could make all sorts of funny things happen inside me just by speaking.
I opened my eyes and saw him smiling at me. My heart fluttered and I felt like I was melting.
“Waking up next to you is the most amazing thing I ever experienced,” he said as he leaned in and placed a soft k**s on my l*ps.
I k**sed him back and smiled. I completely agreed with him. Nothing could ever be as amazing as waking up with his l*ps p**ssed against my neck.
“I hope that we will get to do that all the time,” I said quietly.
Hunter cupped my cheeks and looked at me sternly.
“We will, Sophia,” he said. “I am never sleeping without you again.”
He leaned in and k**sed me. I smiled and placed my hand on top of his.
“As soon as you are feeling a bit better we will go to our pack,” he continued. “We have a lot to do. We have to plan a Luna ceremony. I need everyone to know that you are mine.”
I smiled and gave him a small nod.
“I can’t wait to do all that with you,” I said softly.
I still wasn’t ready to leave my pack, though. I needed just a little bit more time. I missed my family so much and I wanted to spend a few days with them before I left. I wanted to spend some time with Lex. I couldn’t leave him yet.
I furrowed my eyebrows and bit my lower l*p. I had to let Hunter know that I needed a few more days with my family. I hoped that he wouldn’t be upset.
“I would like to stay here for a few days, though,” I added quietly. “I missed my family. I missed Lex. I can’t just leave him again. He needs me. I need him. I…”
Hunter stopped me by p**ssing his l*ps against mine. I took a deep breath of his scent and let it soothe me.
“I know, Angel,” he said softly as he pulled back and caressed my cheek. “We can stay for as long as you want to. My dad will take care of the pack. I will take care of everything, don’t worry.”
He leaned in to place another small k**s on my l*ps. I couldn’t hold back a smile.
“Besides, I am not crazy enough to take you away from Alex just yet,” Hunter added, rolling his eyes playfully. “He would bite my head off.”
I chuckled and ran my fi**gers through his hair.
“He probably would,” I said, shaking my head and smiling.
Hunter caressed my cheek and took a deep breath.
“He missed you a lot,” Hunter said quietly. “He was so scared.”
He gulped and closed his eyes.
“I was so scared,” he added so quietly that I barely heard him.
My heart clenched painfully. I couldn’t even imagine what they were going through. They didn’t deserve any of it.
“I am so sorry,” I said, my voice laced with pain. “I am so sorry.”
