She had blocked his number too.
Finally, when Serena arrived, she spotted him waiting there.
“Serena.”
She had just finished working late and hadn’t eaten, so she had stopped to pick up some takeout.
To be fair, the food earlier that evening had been excellent.
But even the best meal lost all appeal the moment she saw Trevor. The air itself felt unpleasant.
“What are you doing here?” Serena asked coolly. “Aren’t you worried about developing hemorrhoids from standing around?”
She smiled faintly. “Actually, make that hundreds of them.”
Lately, every conversation between them had been sharp. Trevor had endured it until now.
Tonight, he finally snapped.
“Serena, haven’t you caused enough trouble? Unblock me from your contacts. Now.”
She genuinely wondered why he thought she was the one making a scene.
“Trevor, I’m not the one creating drama.”
She gave him a detached glance, eager to get upstairs and eat.
“Move. Well-trained dogs don’t block doorways.”
Trevor grabbed her wrist, a vein pulsing at his temple.
He took a deep breath, forcing his tone to soften. “Here. I bought this for you at last night’s auction. A diamond necklace. Five point two million. That should calm you down, right?”
Five point two million?
Serena looked at him as if he’d lost his mind.
“Oh? That’s rather valuable. Shouldn’t you be giving it to your precious little sister instead?”
Trevor barked, “Why do you always drag Amber into this?
“I’ve said it countless times, she is my sister. You pressure me, Grandpa pressures me. Other than me, no one treats her well. Can’t you try to understand?”
Serena’s voice turned cold. “No. I can’t. I never forced you into anything. I already said we’re done. No wedding. What else do you want?”
Trevor refused to believe she was serious. In his mind, she was just throwing a tantrum.
Calling off a marriage wasn’t something you could do on a whim.
The wedding was only days away. If it were truly canceled, both families would become Denton’s upper echelon’s favorite joke at every social gathering.
“What do you want me to do so you’ll stop being angry, calm down, and marry me?”
Serena studied his face-the one she had once loved. Now, all she saw was restlessness and irritation.
She smiled lightly. “Trevor, do you even want to marry me? Do you love me? Do you actually want me as your wife?”
The question clearly caught him off guard. He cleared his throat twice and looked away. “We’re already engaged. Of course, we should get married.”
So that was it. Marriage because an engagement existed.
Serena smiled again. “Then after we’re married, can you promise you’ll never contact Amber again?”
Trevor looked back at her, speaking slowly, each word weighed down. “Serena, I’ve said this before. Amber and I are close. I will never abandon my sister.”
Serena lowered her eyes and shrugged. “So you don’t love me, yet you expect me to accept that even after marriage, you’ll keep crossing lines with Amber behind my back. Why would I marry someone like that?”
The sadness in her gaze disappeared. Her eyes turned cold. “I’m not marrying you. I’d rather marry a dog. Trevor, did you hear me?”
She tore her wrist free from his grip and went upstairs without turning back.
Trevor stood there, staring at her retreating figure. Is she really serious about ending it?
…
Nathan had arranged a round of golf with Donald.
“Only five days left until Trevor and Rena’s wedding,” Nathan said with a laugh. “Looks like we’re finally becoming family.”
Donald responded without hesitation. “Yes. Being able to marry Trevor is Serena’s blessing.”
After a swing, Nathan tested the waters casually. “But they still haven’t gone to register, right? Donald, have you checked in with Serena?”
Donald pressed his lips together briefly. “They’re just busy. My mother hasn’t been well lately, and Serena was raised by her grandmother. Her emotions might be unstable. It’s nothing serious. We’ll hold the wedding first.”
What Donald said-and what he avoided saying-made the message clear. The wedding was still going ahead.
Nathan relaxed, letting out a quiet breath.
“I heard you’ve been looking into bank financing lately?”
Donald’s expression tightened before he forced a laugh. “Yes. A few projects are waiting on payments, but it’s manageable.”
Nathan didn’t challenge him. “I’m interested in your resort development. Have your team speak with Mr. Edison from our investment division tomorrow.”
Donald was overjoyed. He had known that once the Levine family was involved, the company’s funding issues would disappear.
Just as expected, the money was already falling into place.
“Excellent. I’ll have them follow up right away.”
…
The next morning, the moment Serena stepped into Beaumont Legal, she saw Eugene glowing with excitement.
“Serena, you’re here. Did you eat breakfast? If not, go downstairs and grab something first.”
On any other day, being even a minute late would earn a lecture about discipline and professionalism.
Today felt unreal.
Lily rolled her chair closer and whispered, “Boss is about to sign a big contract.”
“Which one?” Serena reacted a beat too slow.
“Who do you think? The one he’s been obsessed with lately.”
Serena’s eyes narrowed slightly. It actually went through?
She hadn’t expected that. So Sebastian really had heard everything last night.
Serena tightened her grip on her phone, bit her lip, and sent a message.
‘Mr. Sebastian, thank you.’
No matter what, he had helped her. She didn’t allow herself to think too much about it. Using connections for the first time left her feeling uneasy.
Just as she sent the message, Eugene approached from behind, his expression full of triumph.
“Serena, come with me to the Levine Group this afternoon.”
Serena was startled. “Boss, how do you move without making a sound?”
“I didn’t,” Eugene replied. “You were glued to your phone.”
He leaned over and glanced at her screen. “You’ve got an incoming call.”
Serena jerked her head up. On the display was a voice call request from SL.
Eugene glanced between Serena and the phone. “Who’s SL? Why aren’t you answering?”
Panicking, Serena ended the call immediately.
“Uh… nobody important. Probably an insurance scam. They call nonstop. Super annoying.”
Eugene looked unconvinced. Insurance callers usually used real profile photos. That pitch-dark avatar didn’t look right at all.
Still, he didn’t linger on it. “Alright. Get your things and come with me to the Levine Group. Today has to go smoothly.”
“Understood!” Serena replied.
She checked her phone again. On the other end, a huge question mark had appeared.
Serena wanted to disappear on the spot. She hadn’t meant to hang up. She just couldn’t take Sebastian’s call in front of her boss.
