Chapter 29 – My Husband Abandoned Me and My Son

“I don’t know they aren’t rich perhaps they just thought it would be too much of a hassle. But you see, if I can’t rely on my own family who can I rely on!” He told me.

“How much do you need?” I asked him.

“You can’t help me Jasmine. I’m in debt, when I turned 18 and was of legal age I resorted to using credit cards to pay for my fathers dialysis treatments since the insurance denied supporting him,” he said to me. “But it’s too late now. It been too many years if my father receiving inconsistent treatment. God knows how long he has to live now. The doctors keep suggesting that we stop wasting money paying for dialysis treatments since it’s not going to help in the end.”

I felt my eyes water up hearing him speak. He was in so much pain.

“How much are you in debt?” I managed to ask him with out tearing up.

” I have accumulated about 15,000 usd in debt and it’s increasing every month.” He told me.

Being in debt as a college student was awful especially since student typically took also out loans to study. So it like he was in double debt. 15,000 was a lot to owe too.It was truly humbling hearing him say this. To think I used to spend amounts like this frivolously with no care in the world when I lived as a socialite. Meanwhile someone else was struggling to make that amount. Now with the life I now lived I had a new appreciation for working class people.

I looked at Victoria who was playing with Tony down the hallway as they ate the snacks they had gotten from the vending machine.

“How much does your fathers kidney transplant cost?” I then asked him.

“22,000 usd,” he told me. “You see either way there’s no way for me to pay for it.”

He was 15 thousand in debt and he needed 22,000 for his fathers kidney transplant.

So he needed just under 40000. I had 50,000 usd from the luxury goods.

I could give him the 40,000usd he needed. It was supposed to be for investing for Anthony but Mikes father was going to die.

“I can give you the money you need,” I told him.

His eyes widened in surprise. “What?” he said in disbelief.

“I’ll give you the money you need,” I assured him.

“That’s a lot of money to have lying around to casually give to someone. Unless you mean you’ll take a loan,” he said to me.

I couldn’t tell him I got the money selling luxury goods I’d received. He thought I was an ordinary salary woman not a socialite.

“It’s my savings,” I told him. “It’s money I received from my family and from working.”That should be believable enough I thought to myself. I mean it was partially true.

“I can’t take your savings, I can’t accept that it’s not right,” he told me.

“Mike your father will die if he doesn’t get the treatment, right?” I reasoned with him. “You don’t have a choice!”

“There’s no way I would be able to pay you back,” he told me.

“There’s no way I would be able to pay you back,” he told me.

“You don’t have to pay me back,” I told him. “You suffered enough growing up Mike. Just accept help from someone this one time. Knowing your father is getting better would make me happy.” I to,d him.

I had intended to use the 50000 to invest in something for my son so he has something to inherit if I died in future however, Mike really needed the money. I couldn’t not help him out. I would unfortunately have to figure out some other way to make money.

“I – I don’t know what to say,” he then said to me in disbelief. “I just can’t believe it.”

“You don’t have to say anything I assured him.

“Thank you,” he said.

As I thought of his words something then came to mind. “Actually, there is one thing you can do for me Mike,” I said to him.

“What?” He asked me eagerly.

“I want you to talk to Megan she’s worried sick about you. And has been for a long time. You don’t have to tell her about everything just give her some reassurance.” I told him. “Think you can do that for me?”

He went red after I mentioned her name. That was a dead giveaway away that he did in fact like her.

“Al – alright,” he agreed shyly.

“Good,” I said to him. “Hopefully we’ll get this sorted as soon as possible.”

After that we exchanged our contacts so we could organise how I could send him the money later. I then called for Tony who was talking to Victoria. He seemed to like and said she was a nice person.

I then had to reschedule my appointment with the lawyer for another day as it was now too late for me to go. Her office closed at midday on Saturdays and I had spent most of the morning with Mike and Victoria. The lawyer agreed and said Monday was the only day she had another open slot for the next week. Though I had to work on Monday, I would ask the manager if I could leave earlier.

After we exchanged our goodbyes, Tony and I left them and exited the hospital. I was really glad I had passed through the hospital though I then went to to sell the remaining luxury goods at a pawn shop and obtained the full 50,000.

I didn’t know how to describe how I was feeling. On the one hand I was happy to have been able to help Mike but on the other I was wondering how I was going to deal with my own situation. I had been relieved to not have to hassle to much to make money and invest in something. With the 50,000 I could just get straight into investing. Now I had to come up with something else.

Tony and I then went home and spent the rest of the day there. We wouldn’t be doing an activity today unfortunately. However, that was a problem for the future. Right now I had to ensure Mike’s father’s kidney transplant was successful. Having made the full amount I needed from the pawn shops, I could now send Mike the money he needed.

I then communicated with Mike and he told me the details of the procedure his father required. I also received information on how I should make the payments to the hospital for the procedure. Once all that was taken care of they could proceed with the transplant.

However, Mike also shared some troubling news that the doctors were worried about the success rate of doing the transplant now on his father. Due to the fact that his father had been doing inconsistent dialysis treatments for so long causing his kidneys to become completely damaged and affect other internal organs, they weren’t sure if his body would respond to the new kidney. The news was definitely terrifying.

None the less I told him to go ahead with the procedure. Despite the uncertainty it was still worth trying. One thing we knew for certain was that if his father didn’t get the surgery he would die.

Mike also gave me the information on the credit card debt he had so I could see how much he had accumulated and the payment he made. He also sent me his bank details so I could make the transfer.

So for the rest of the afternoon I was dealing with and making the necessary transfers whilst Tony was busy finishing off his homework. He had planned to finish it off on Sunday when we were at home and cleaning up but since we were home already I had him take care of it now.

Overall, I felt great sense of accomplishment. I had not only helped Mike but I had gotten him to open up as well. I just hoped the procedure would turn out positively.

********

The following day, which was a Sunday, Tony and I were at home as usual resetting for the week. We deep cleaned the house and did our laundry and prepared our things for the coming week. By early afternoon we were done cleaning. With each week that passed we were becoming faster and more efficient.

We had just finished lunch and were now baking a cake in the kitchen. I had the last of our dirty laundry that was done in the washing machine and needed to be dried. I had Tony watch the cake baking in the oven as I made my way to the laundry room. I changed most of the clothes from the washing machine to the drier. However there were some clothes that needed to be handled with care and couldn’t go in the drier but had to dry normally in the sun.

As I made my way to the backyard where the clothesline was the doorbell of the front door suddenly rang. “I’ll get it,” Tony yelled.

“No, don’t worry I’ll get it!” I quickly told Tony. I didn’t want him to open the door for a stranger. I went for the door wondering who it was. I wasn’t expecting anyone today.

“Okay,” he responded.
