He shakes his head and bites his fist. I want to take his pain away, but I need to know the truth, so I let him talk.
“After your mother told me to keep you safe if anything happened to her, it freaked me out, so I started tailing her. That fucking car that rammed you into the lake came from nowhere. I’m still not sure how they did it.”
I rest my hand on his back as he relives that awful evening.
“They said they thought your dad was driving. They didn’t know it was you and your mother inside…”
I freeze.
“So, you saw them?” I ask. “After that night?”
Chris leans back and looks me in the eye.
“Yes,” he states. “And they suffered a lot more than your mother. They’ll never bother you again.”
Wow. I never thought I’d be pleased that someone died, but relief soaks through me.
I knew something was wrong with my dad’s story. That meant I was always anxious that someone was out there, watching and waiting. But my guardian angel protected me like he always does.
“Thank you,” I tell him, and Chris flinches at my words.
“What?” he gasps. “I thought you’d be angry?”
I shake my head. “How can I be angry with everything you’ve done for me, Chris? I wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for you.”
Before he can speak, I kiss his lips and take his chiseled jaw in my hands.
“You don’t have to do this anymore,” I say. “All the guns and violence. I’m scared that you won’t come home one night.”
“That won’t happen,” he says.
“You don’t know that.”
“Yes, I do,” he insists. “I’m done with all that bullshit. Told your dad last week. From now on, unless trouble finds me, I won’t go looking for it.”
Even more relief floods my body and the tension in my shoulders evaporates over the city.
“I don’t want to live here,” I tell him.
He frowns. “What? Why?”
“I’ll get too lonely,” I tease, glancing back at his portrait. “If only that sexy guy in the painting was a real person… He could live here with me.”
Chris gulps hard.
“If you’re sure,” he mimes. “I have it on good authority that he fuckingloves that idea.”
I giggle as Chris steps back and kicks off his shoes.
“Don’t you have work?” I ask.
“Nope,” he says. “I’m a good boss, but a shit employee. So I gave myself a month off. I’m all yours…”
“But-“
Chris steps forward and presses his finger to my lips.
“You’re a magnet, Harper Reeves,” he mimes, locking his eyes on mine. “And I care about you more than I’ve ever cared about anything or anyone.”
My tears match his as we gaze at one another.
“I love you,” I tell him.
I always promised myself I would never fall for a man like my father. But Chris Collins is nothing like my dad. He loves me unconditionally and he shows it every day.
“I love you too,” he whispers. “More than I ever dreamed possible.”
Wow. He actually said it.
His dark eyes lighten as his honesty seeps into me like sunshine, and a profound sense of peace overwhelms me.
Because I know that Chris and I have the rest of forever to enjoy each other.
And all the tomorrows are ours to share…
