Not only had he lost his dignity, but he had also tarnished the Watson family’s reputation. What hit him the hardest was that Khloe had severed ties with him before his grandfather.
Suddenly, Baker grabbed Gwyn and shoved her towards Khloe, forcing her into the spotlight. His eyes held a look of disappointment as he addressed Gwyn, his voice firm and commanding. “Now you see who was right and who was wrong, don’t you? Apologize to Khloe and ask for her forgiveness!”
Gwyn, furious and stubborn, couldn’t accept that they were entirely to blame for the situation. “No. We’ve done nothing wrong!”
Baker, fuming with rage, barked, “Will you apologize or not? If not, then whatever happens next is on you. Go ahead, end up in jail for all I care, but the Cullen family will have nothing more to do with you.”
Never before had he spoken to Gwyn with such venom. To think that he would end their father-daughter bond over Khloe sent Gwyn into a panic, and she broke down in tears.
Baker was well-known for spoiling his daughter, which was why she had grown so spoiled. But now, in the face of Khloe, he was ready to turn his back on her.
The root of this was the plummeting stock price of the Mason family, caused by a single phone call from a powerful individual they could not afford to defy.
Baker’s words reverberated through the room, making everyone pause and reconsider everything that had unfolded that day, particularly the weight of that phone call.
A few parents began to voice similar frustrations. “Exactly! Today I watched my child being manipulated into bullying her own classmates.”
“I’m deeply disappointed. Is this really what Zhecrora University has taught my child-to be manipulated so easily?”
“Apologize to Khloe. If she refuses to forgive, we’ll bear any consequences!”
The tide had turned in Khloe’s favor, but she kept checking her watch, calculating Henrik’s imminent arrival. She was done with these hypocrites. She knew they were only acting out of fear of Henrik’s influence.
“Everything will be sorted through legal channels,” she stated firmly, giving Clinton a signal before she turned to walk away.
Just as she was about to leave the police station, Gwyn’s voice rang out unexpectedly. “Khloe, if you have the courage, stay at Zhecrora University. I don’t believe…”
Before Gwyn could finish her words, her father hurried over and pressed his hand firmly against her mouth.
Khloe shot a glance over her shoulder, and in that moment, Gwyn looked utterly intimidated, her eyes wide with fear, trembling.
Khloe sneered, her gaze dripping with disdain as she saw her for what she was-all talk and no action.
Just then, a Maybach rolled up, coming to a halt a short distance away from the police station.
Clinton rushed after her, calling her name, but Khloe didn’t even look back, heading straight into the car without a second thought.
The night had deepened, and through the darkened window of the car, they could only see a tall figure.
It was a man’s figure, and both Eric and Clinton instinctively recognized something familiar about him, though they couldn’t place who he was.
Jealousy flared in Eric’s chest, an intense, burning sensation that he couldn’t shake. “Khloe, you’ll eventually come crawling back to me.”
The crowd watched in silence as the figure in the car whisked Khloe away.
As soon as Khloe slid into the car, she could feel the man next to her practically radiating with barely contained anger. Had she somehow done something to upset him?
“What happened? Was the meeting not a success today?” Khloe asked.
Henrik had planned to go with Khloe to the university, but a sudden phone call pulled him away for an urgent matter. Although Khloe didn’t know the details, she could see the tension on Henrik’s face after he ended the call.
Realizing he was already stressed, Khloe decided not to burden Henrik with anything unnecessary.
Rather than responding to her, he changed the topic. “You went to the university today, knowing Sloane would deal with you. You used it to your advantage, tarnishing her reputation at Zhecrora University.”
That had indeed been Khloe’s original plan, though she hadn’t mentioned it to Henrik.
Hearing Henrik’s words, Khloe quickly understood he was upset about her not telling him the full truth.
“I didn’t mean to keep this from you. It’s just that I noticed how swamped you were today. I figured dealing with Sloane was trivial. I didn’t want to add to your stress by bringing it up,” Khloe explained sincerely.
Henrik could tell Khloe genuinely meant it, and she just wanted to spare him the trouble. Yet, he couldn’t shake the discomfort. To him, her actions felt distant, as if she were keeping him at arm’s length.
Henrik was usually so caught up in both his legitimate business and underworld dealings that finding a moment to himself was rare. But today, the moment his meeting wrapped up, he received word from his men that Khloe had gotten herself into some kind of trouble and was at the police station.
The idea of her being all alone, without even reaching out for help, stirred an unexplainable frustration within him. It was like finding out that his pet had gotten into trouble without him knowing until it was too late.
When Henrik arrived and saw his two nephews standing there, his anger intensified. The sight of them only added fuel to the fire burning inside him.
“Was Clinton there as well?” Henrik asked, trying to sound indifferent.
“Huh? Yes, he was,” Khloe answered, caught off guard by Henrik’s sudden question about Clinton.
She paused, and a headache began to form as she thought it through. During the earlier incident, it was likely that no one outside had noticed Henrik, or if they had, they wouldn’t have been able to recognize him.
However, Henrik must have seen Eric and Clinton at the station. Henrik understood what was happening with Eric, but Khloe was anxious about explaining why Clinton had been there. Given Henrik’s sharp mind, he must have seen Clinton’s intentions clearly. Khloe wondered if Henrik’s attention to Clinton’s behavior was fueled by possessiveness.
Was that the reason for the heavy tension between them now? Khloe didn’t feel comfortable bringing it up with him, though.
While their relationship was friendly, there were still lines of politeness that needed to be respected, and she wasn’t sure if it was the right moment to cross them. She was cautious not to overstep, aware that being Henrik’s fiancee didn’t give her license to act recklessly.
Khloe sat there, trying to figure out how to put her thoughts into words. Henrik, on the other hand, remained silent beside her, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel. The sound was like the ticking of a clock, making her feel more on edge.
Khloe felt confident she could explain if he asked, but his silence unsettled her, leaving her in a state of uncertainty.
