Sighing, I decided it wouldn’t hurt to ask. The most Dave could say was that he’s all out of favors now. I technically have until the 1st to get everything out, but since I’m leaving on Sunday, I really only have this weekend.
I found Dave in his office, lounging back in his chair and watching some movie on his laptop. When he saw me, he paused the movie and sighed heavily as he sat up. For a man in his 50s who only watches TV all day, he sure is grumpy.
“What can I do for you now, Miss Hartman?” He asked with a fake smile.
“I can’t get the big stuff on my own, and I was wondering-“
“We don’t offer moving help here,” he cut me off, turning back to his laptop like that was the end of our conversation.
“Well, if you would have let me finish instead of interrupting me-“
“Miss Hartman, just get your sh.it and get out,” he cut me off again. “Haven’t I done enough for you?” Then he scoffed and played his movie.
Oh, man, it really sucks to be Dave right now. He has no idea that my life is an utter mess at the moment. And quite frankly, I’m pretty sick of everyone assuming I’m just as kind as my parents were. Because I’m really just not.
I walked right up to Dave’s desk and shut his laptop. His angry, little beady eyes snapped up to meet my eyes. Whatever he saw there had him snapping his lips shut before he could piss me off further.
“If you keep interrupting me, I’m going to teach you the manners your momma never did,” I stated, my voice calm but angry. “Shut the fu.ck up for once in your miserable life and just listen. I was just going to ask if I could leave it for the next tenant to use. If that’s not okay, I’ll figure it the fuck out like I always do. Even if I have to bring a chainsaw in and chop sh.it up. But do you really want to see me back here with a chainsaw, Dave? Do you?” I asked and he shook his head vigorously. “No, you don’t,” I agreed. “So, is it cool if I leave it?”
“Y-yeah, just not your mattress if that’s there,” he stuttered, frowning at me like I just pi.ssed in his cereal. “People get put off by that. Afraid of bed bugs and sh.it.”
“Well, fu.ck!” I said loudly, slamming my hands on his desk. “I wouldn’t blame them in this case.
There’s probably more to worry about than bed bugs on that mattress.”
Dave gave me a strange look, but I ignored him and turned around. I was about to march my a.ss back up to my apartment and drag that heavy-as-sh.-it queen-sized mattress to the dumpster. I stopped after one step though, when I saw three guys standing in the doorway of Dave’s office. Based off their amused expressions, they just caught the whole show.
I recognized them from school and around town. They’re all part of The Salvation Knights MC. The twins graduated from high school with me, but we were never friends. They had a whole clique of their own, and I… liked to just be with my garden. Or Sophie if she could manage to drag me somewhere. The other guy I’d seen around before, but he wasn’t from here originally. I believe he moved here sometime after I started college.
My eyes flickered to their cuts, wandering over the patches. I knew the twins’ names, but not their road-names. Again, I don’t know much, but I know enough to know that you never call a patched member by their government name. That was something I never even pushed my luck with around Jinx. Everyone’s called him that since elementary school, but it’s not like we didn’t know his real name either, due to school. As much as I give Jinx sh.it, I’d never crossed that line.
I wasn’t even sure what the big deal was about it, other than respect, and I’d had no problem disrespecting Jinx whenever I spoke to him. Again, something about the man irks me. I think it’s that stupid smile of his. The one that lights up his whole face. Ugh!
“B-boys,” Dave stuttered as he shot to his feet.
Why do I feel I’m the one interrupting something here?
Deidra’s P.O.V.
“B-boys,” Dave stuttered as he shot to his feet.
The one who was newer to town, Psych, according to his cut, stepped into the office, glaring at Dave.
“Boys?” he asked flatly.
“Oh, uh, w-well-“
“You’re like 25 years younger than him,” I blurted, hating myself for my inability to shut the fu.ck up.
Psych turned his head to me and raised one of his dark brows. The man is menacing, that much is obvious. I must have some sort of defect though, because I just can’t seem to shut up.
“I just mean… that kinda makes you a kid to him, a boy, if you will,” I rambled. “I just mean that maybe you should let it go. We all see that you’re nothing but man, Psych. So, let him, like, keep his tongue or whatever?”
Oh. My. Fu.cking. God. What the hell is wrong with you Deidra!?
The twins sputtered out laughter, but Psych didn’t look impressed at all. He didn’t look upset either, so there was that. I don’t think I dug myself too deep a hole.
“Jesus Thorn, we ain’t gonna take the guy’s tongue for calling us boys,” one of the twins, Villain, said.
Villain? That’s kind of rude. I never saw him as a villain-type. Maybe the villain in his own story. He was the type to self-sabotage, from what I recall.
“Yeah, he’d have to call us pansies or bit.ches for us to cut his tongue out,” the other one, Void, added, chuckling.
Void. I could see that. Not because he’s rude or quiet. Well, I suppose he’s the more quiet twin, but I’d bet it’s those black eyes of his. Who even has eyes that dark?
“Don’t call me that,” I snapped at them, realizing that Villain called me that stupid name. “I swear to god, one day I’m going to come up with the stupidest nickname in history for Jinx and paint it across your club’s front gates!” I declared.
Thankfully, the twins only laughed instead of taking me seriously. Even Psych cracked a smile at that. Dave looked like he was about to pi.ss himself. And I… wanted to crawl under a rock and die.
“We’ll be sure to let Jinx know,” Void said, chuckling.
“Great,” I grumbled, rolling my eyes.
“Dave,” Psych broke the tension, knocking on the desk.
Dave’s eyes flickered to me, and I took that as my que to leave. I stepped out of the office, practically having to shove past the twins. They thought it was hilarious. Fu.cking jerks.
I was about to take the stairs to my third floor apartment when I noticed the truck sitting outside. It caught my attention because it had The Salvation Knights’ logo on the side. I wasn’t sure why these three were going around in a truck instead of on their bikes, but it had an idea forming in my head that was too good to pass up.
“Hey,” I said, getting the twins’ attention. “You guys busy today?”
“You sure about this?” Void asked as we pulled the mattress from the bed of the truck. I say we, but I swear it was all me. These three were nearly completely useless. Despite saying yes to this little idea of mine, they seem very fu.cking apprehensive about it.
“I thought you guys were bada.ss bikers?” I snapped at them after finally dragging the mattress off the bed of the truck by myself.
Jesus, who helped me get this heavy thing into my apartment in the first place? Oh yeah. Theo and his two buddies.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Psych asked, clearly upset about my jab at them.
“That means that you should be all over this plan!” I said, throwing my arms in the air. “This is totally mundane compared to the rumors that float around about all of you guys!”
“Rumors?” Void asked.
“As in, you don’t believe they’re true?” Villain added, curiously.
“How would I know if they’re true or not?” I replied, frowning. “I seriously doubt some of them are though. I’m not dumb enough to believe everything I hear.”
“But you’re dumb enough to think that, as bikers, we should be all over this.” Psych deadpanned.
“Just stand there and look pretty then!” I bit out, narrowing my eyes at him.
“We could get arrested,” was all he said.
“Wow,” I replied flatly, putting my fists on my hips. “Never thought I’d see the day when a biker was afraid of the cops.”
That made the twins snicker, but Psych was not happy.
“You’re fu.cking mouthy,” he grumbled.
“I know!” I shouted. “And pi.ssed. And tired. And sick of being pushed around. And I am hella overdue for some fu.cking wild behavior. So, are you gonna help me or not?”
