Chapter 9 – Traitors Will Kneel Down

Cassian gripped his leg, it hurt terribly from running all the way there, his leg couldn’t hold him anymore, and he fell to the ground on his knees. Alessandro stopped what he was doing and helped his brother to stand up and said to him,

“Cassian, you came running here.”

“You know you shouldn’t do that.”

“I know, I’m a wreck that can hardly walk.” Cassian replied.

“Don’t say that, brother.” The king said sympathetically.

Alessandro helped him reach the sofa and said to him.

“One day, I will find a way to heal your injury, and you will be able to walk without any problem.”

“You know that’s impossible, Lessan?” Cassian said.

“I will make it possible.”

“Just give me a little more time, trust me.” The king replied.

During the war, Cassian had encountered King Venobich on the battlefield, who almost ripped his leg off. If it wasn’t for Alessandro who had confronted King Venobich, he would have died at the hands of that demon.

The severity of his injury was such that even though he had used healing magic, the damage remained. Since that day, the pain accompanied him day and night, and he also had great difficulty walking.

Seeing his brother so downtrodden, Cassian said to him.

“It’s okay, Lessan, I trust you.”

Although Alessandro had forbidden him from going to see Abril, Cassian disobeyed him. When he arrived at the small house, he knocked on the door, but nobody opened it. He looked through the window to see if she was inside, but it seemed empty. Cassian wondered where she had gone and if she was plotting against the royal family.

Cassian’s leg was hurting a lot. He leaned against the door of the house as his leg began to fail him again.

“It was not a good idea to come here, but I can’t leave that woman unattended.”

“I’m worried she’s planning something,” Cassian said.

Abril arrived shortly after. She was holding a reddish ball of fur in her arms. When she saw Cassian, she stepped back. He tried to reach her, but his leg failed him, and he ended up falling to the ground, hitting his forehead against a stone.

Abril stood still, wondering why he wasn’t getting up. She approached carefully, keeping her distance, and asked him.

“Are you okay?”

Seeing that Cassian didn’t respond, she poked him with her finger, but he didn’t react. She turned him over and saw an ugly bump on his forehead. Although Cassian had tried to hurt her, Abril couldn’t retaliate in the same way. She took him inside the house, treated the wound on his forehead, and stayed by his side, taking care of him until he woke up.

When Cassian opened his eyes, he found himself in a strange place. He wondered where he was. As he sat up, he saw the princess by the fireplace, stoking the fire. When she saw him, she asked him.

“Are you okay?”

“Where am I?” He questioned.

“This is my house.”

“You fell while chasing me and hit your head.” Abril said.

Cassian remembered what had happened. His leg had been hurting a lot, and when he tried to catch Abril, his leg gave out and he fell. Cassian always felt pain in his leg, however, at that moment that wasn’t the case, the pain had almost completely disappeared.

“What did you do to me?” He asked.

“I only treated the wound on your forehead,” she replied.

Cassian stood up, grabbed Abril by the shoulders and asked her,

“My leg doesn’t hurt anymore, tell me what you did to me.”

“Your leg was hurting?”

“I didn’t do anything to you.”

“Like I mentioned before, I only treated the wound on your forehead.”

“I didn’t do anything to your leg.”

“You’re hurting me, please let go of me.” Abril said.

Cassian let go of her and asked,

“Why did you help me?”

“I behaved very badly to you yesterday.”

“I couldn’t leave you injured in front of my house,” she replied. Iweren’t in your house.”

“When I arrived, you weren’t in

“Where did you go?” He asked.

“I went for a walk in the forest,” she said.

Abril stepped back, took a small basket that was next to the fireplace, and showed Cassian what was inside. It was a small fox with reddish fur.

“I found this little one while I was walking.”

“It was injured.” She said.

“That’s a fox,” Cassian said.

“I know, it’s so cute.”

“I think it looks like me.”

“I think I’ll keep it.”

“It was alone.”

“So I don’t think it has a family.” She said.

Although he hated her, Cassian wasn’t ungrateful, so he didn’t do anything. Besides, Alessandro had forbidden him. But since he didn’t trust her, he said,

“I’ll come every day to make sure you’re hot plotting anything against my family.”

Abril wondered if the blow to his head had made him foolish. What could she be plotting in that remote place where she lived alone?

Cassian headed towards the door and told her,

“I’ll be watching you.”

After saying what he wanted, he left.

Abril sighed heavily. She had recently gotten rid of the servants and now another annoyance had entered her life.

That day, Cassian’s leg hardly hurt. For the first time in a long time, he had a good night’s rest. But the next day, when he woke up, the pain returned sharply. The previous day seemed to have been just a dream.

Cassian wondered what Abril had given him to soothe his pain. Although she had said she hadn’t given him anything, he didn’t believe her. After breakfast, he returned, knocked on the door several times until Abril opened the door. She was only wearing a short nightgown with a low neckline, wrapped in a blanket. Cassian blushed when he saw her and said to her.

“You’re shameless, why are you dressed like that?”

Abril rubbed her eyes and said to him.

“I was sleeping.”

“The sun has been out for a while.”

“How can you still be in bed at this hour?” He questioned.

Abril wrapped herself tightly in the blanket and said to him.

“It’s winter, I have nothing better to do, and it’s cold.”
