Even though it had been just for a second, he did hear her!
He heard Lillian’s voice, and she so clearly and melodically called out “Dad.”
It was Lillian.
He did not know who the woman who called him was just now, but he was certain that Lillian was at the place the woman mentioned. That was why he was rushing over hurriedly.
Presently, the phone rang again. He looked at the number and answered without hesitating.
“Hello? Is this Lily? Lily?” Fabian questioned urgently.
When Carter, who held the receiver on the other end, heard Fabian’s voice, his dark gaze darkened further.
Saying nothing, he slowly placed the receiver back to where it was, then simply yanked the telephone cord out.
He seemed to furrow his long eyebrows in annoyance before he strode to the bedroom.
After picking up the phone, it hung up unfathomably again, so Fabian immediately knew something was amiss.
However, he did not have a choice now, and he could only increase his speed and rush toward his destination.
The address Shirley had told him was a little far from where he was now, but he was frantic right now.
After the phone had suddenly hung up twice, he kept feeling that something had happened to Lillian.
He thought in confusion as he drove the car faster and faster. However, he did not notice that a car had been following him the entire time.
Approximately twenty minutes later, Fabian finally arrived at his destination.
The apartment building before him was simply decorated, located in a relatively remote corner of the suburb. Some of the surveillance cameras in the road sections were old and damaged, so that was why he had not been able to find this place before.
He quickly rushed to Unit 9oz which Shirley mentioned, and then he raised his hand to knock on the door.
“Lily, Lily, are you inside? This is Fab!”
Fabian announced who he was, but there was no response.
Anxious, Fabian knocked harder, but with such a force, the door in front of him was pushed open.
The apartment door was not locked.
Fabian pushed the door open and strode in. “Lily! ”
He shouted Lillian’s name, searching room after room, but he found nothing in the end.
“Lily.”
Fabian dropped his eyes in disappointment, but suddenly a figure rushed into the doorway.
He immediately raised his head, “Li… Eveline?”
Surprised, he looked at Niamh who came in hurriedly. His eyes were filled with confusion.
Niamh, however, did not pay any attention to Fabian. After coming in, she searched room after room as Fabian had done, and her expectant gaze was gradually replaced by a tinge of loss.
“Eveline, have you been following me?” Fabian finally realized.
Niamh took a deep breath in silence, then turned her head.
“Yes, I’ve been following you, ” Niamh answered very candidly, meeting Fabian’s puzzled look. “So, why are you here? Lily was originally here, wasn’t she?”
Fabian furrowed his eyebrows. “I think so.” “What’s that supposed to mean?” Niamh asked.
Fabian looked at Niamh and frowned. “Not long ago, a woman called me and said that Lily is here. She told me to come here to pick Lily up. I did hear Lily’s voice, but the call hung up soon after.”
After listening to what Fabian said, Niamh quickly noticed the landline phone placed on the cabinet.
She intuitively walked over and found that the telephone cord was unplugged.
After reinstalling it, she naturally pressed the redial button, and Fabian’s cell phone rang.
Fabian looked at the caller ID and glanced at Niamh. He was even more certain now.
“It seems that Lily was really here. It’s a bit messy here, and it looks like they left in a hurry.”
Niamh concluded and then she looked around the apartment again. Soon, she discovered a very cute hairband on the bed in the bedroom.
“I bought this for Lily two days ago, ” Fabian said with certainty as he looked at the hairband in
Niamh’s hand. His expression also changed gradually.
“I’m going to talk to the manager of this apartment. I’ll ask them to show me the surveillance footage of the corridor. There should be some clues.”
As Fabian said that, he started making calls to his connections.
Niamh looked at Fabian’s eyes that were filled with worry. She could feel his genuine concern toward Lillian.
After some time, Fabian got hold of the footage.
The manager brought Niamh and Fabian to the surveillance room. After watching the footage from ten minutes ago, Niamh was shocked.
Sure enough, it was exactly the same as Fabian thought. Carter was the one in the dessert shop that day who took Lillian away when Fabian did not notice.
When Fabian saw Shirley in a wheelchair, he also came to a conclusion with certainty. “This woman should be the one who called me.”
Upon hearing that, Niamh could not help but sigh.
“I didn’t expect Carter to bring Shirley to F Country.”
“ Shirley?” Fabian was confused. “ Is this woman named Shirley?”
Niamh nodded. From the surveillance footage, she could clearly see that her baby girl followed Shirley in a well-behaved manner.
“They just left ten minutes ago. If you follow the footage, you should be able to find them soon, ” Niamh said, looking at Fabian. “You know a lot of people here, so you should be able to get the real- time surveillance footage along the way.”
Without another word, Fabian immediately took out his phone to follow suit.
However, even though he managed to contact the relevant personnel, he was told that the surveillance cameras of the roads in this area were broken because they were too old. Recently, they had applied for replacements, so they could not get any footage at the present.
Upon getting this result, Niamh and Fabian felt very helpless.
Niamh still wanted to discuss with Fabian, but Fabian turned around and walked out quickly.
Niamh followed him hurriedly, “Where are you going?”
“I’m going to find Lily, of course! ” “Do you know where she is?”
“They just left not long ago. So, at most, I’ll look along the way. Perhaps I’ll run into them by chance.”
As Fabian spoke, he walked toward the apartment entrance.
Niamh could see that Fabian was truly anxious, but she felt that the chances of finding Lilian this way were too small.
Furthermore, Carter was not someone whom they could track easily.
“Fabian, I know you’re worried about Lily, but you can rest assured that Lily won’t be in danger for the time being.”
Niamh gave a confident and reassuring answer.
Fabian had just opened the car door and he was about to get into the car. When he heard this, he could not help but freeze.
“Why do you say that? Do you know why Carter wanted to take Lily? Do you know how cruel and terrifying his methods are?”
“I know what kind of person he is, and I have already experienced it firsthand, but no matter how aggressive he is, he won’t be cruel in front of the woman he loves most.”
Fabian frowned upon hearing this. “You mean the woman named Shirley?”
“Yes.” Niamh continued, “I believe Lily won’t be in danger if she’s with Shirley.”
“You may believe that, but I don’t. From what I know about Carter, he will do anything. And the person he loves most isn’t that woman—it’s himself.”
Fabian said that with certainty before driving away decisively.
Niamh could not stop him even if she wanted to.
Although Fabian had said that, Niamh still chose to believe her judgment.
Additionally, from what she had seen in the footage, Lilian stayed with Shirley the whole time, so Lilian seemed to trust Shirley a lot. Shirley also gave Lilian a gentle and friendly smile.
“Huff.” Niamh took a deep breath. She looked at the family portrait on her phone screen, and a benevolent smile showed on her face.
